Posuny v turecké zahraniční politice v éře R. T. Erdoğana a její dopady na vztahy s USA a Izraelem
Ikizgül, Varol
My bachelor's thesis deals with the shape and development of Turkish-American and Turkish-Israeli foreign relations, especially in the era of R. T. Erdoğan. The aim of the thesis is to answer the question of how Turkey's foreign policy has changed after the accession of R. T. Erdoğan and how significantly these changes have affected the gradual development of foreign relations with the United States and Israel. Turkish, Israeli, and American interests, particularly in the Middle East, often overlap, which is why their foreign relations are very dynamic. The thesis points out that although Turkey remains one of the United States' main partners in NATO, Erdoğan's foreign policy has repeatedly come into conflict with the foreign policies of the Biden administration, the Trump administration, or the Obama administration before that. In particular, I see the Kurdish issue, or the issue of acquiring military technology outside NATO structures, as a fundamental core of the conflicts. Also central to the strengthening of Russia and Iran's positions of power is the position of Israel, which is an important strategic ally of both the United States and Turkey. Despite the fact that Turkish-Israeli relations have been in very good shape most of the time, the Gaza Strip was, especially in the first half of the 2010s, a bone of contention between the two countries.
The 2016 Coup d'Etat Attempt in Turkey and its Impact in Kosovo: A look into the Media Discourse Surrounding the 2018 Gulenist Extraditions and the Resulting Turkish-Kosovo Relationship.
Day, Ryan ; Žíla, Ondřej (advisor) ; Hornát, Jan (referee)
The overall purpose of this thesis is three folded; to analyze Turkey's constantly changing influence since the 1990s in the Western Balkans, consider the failed 2016 coup attempt in Turkey and the anti-Gülenist campaign by Erdogan in the region (with Kosovo as the focus), and to delve into the international and local media discourse surrounding the deportations of suspected Gülenist from Kosovo with the help of Turkish intelligence on March 29, 2018. Employing a mixed methodology approach, the author evaluated existing sources in an attempt to answer the research question; "In what ways has the 2016 Coup d'état attempt in Turkey resonated in the Western Balkans, and how did the local and international media discourse portray the 2018 Gülenists extraditions from Kosovo to Turkey?" The research holds that while the media discourse displayed Kosovo and Turkey's actions as being in violation of numerous international laws, the issue was quickly swept away from the spotlight. Since 2012 (the beginning of the Erdogan-Gülen rift) and especially following the 2016 failed coup attempt in Turkey, Erdogan has been emboldened by his growing personal relationships with key Balkan politicians. This has led to continued demands (thus far met with little success) that Western Balkan states arrest and deport...
The Relation Between the Military and Religion in the Political Regimes of Iran and Turkey
Wei, Jifu ; Salamon, Janusz (advisor) ; Riegl, Martin (referee)
In the Middle East region, Iran and Turkey are influential powers, and both countries have relatively stable regimes in the Middle East countries. The two countries have chosen different paths after their political transformation. After reviewing the political practice of the two countries, due to different political environments, the two armies and religions have played prominent but different roles. After the Islamic revolution in Iran, the army was the protector of the regime, while religion played a leading role. After Kemal Ataturk established power, Turkey took a completely secularized road. The Turkish army was the defender of the secularized path independent of the government in the Turkish regime, while Islamic religion tried to exert influence as a political party. In addition, the article discusses whether it is based on complete secularization or is derived from Islamic religious tradition, which is a feasible way to modernize Islamic countries. At present, since Islam still has considerable influence, only by adapting Islam to the needs of modern society and making modernization the internal needs of Islam can Islamic countries be successfully modernized.
Foreign Policy of Obama's and Trump's Administration towards Turkey
Kučera, Jakub ; Calda, Miloš (advisor) ; Raška, Francis (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the comparison of Barack Obama's and Donald Trump's policies towards Turkey in the context of the current crisis in the relationship with United States. The aim of the thesis is to answer the question of whether the policies of the two presidents were coherent and how the possible differences are reflected in today's deteriorating relations. The work focuses on three areas: cooperation inside NATO, the Kurdish minority issue, and the transformation of the domestic political situation in Turkey. The thesis argues that despite a different general approach to foreign policy, the concrete steps taken by both Presidents towards Turkey do not differ significantly. Obama's disillusionment with the perception of the U.S.-Turkey relationship as a model partnership has considerably changed his own policy in the second term. Within NATO, Trump followed up on Obama's policy towards Turkey through the support of the missile defense system and the ongoing use of US military facilities inside Turkey. The Kurdish question represents the most critical point in the relationship. Trump has so far supported Kurdish cooperation to the same extent as Obama, but recent agreements with Erdoğan may lead to a change in his approach and to a consequent improvement in relations. The different attitude...
Could Turkey Leave NATO? The interrelation of Antithetic Narratives
Kotzias, Panagiotis ; Aslan, Emil (advisor) ; Střítecký, Vít (referee)
Within the current epoch, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is challenged more than ever. The axiomatic values established in the post-Cold War era from the Western Liberal block are faced once again with antithetic narratives, reflecting strong elements of authoritarianism and dogmatic positions. This time however, the threat is coming from within. Turkey's stance after the 2016 military coup is steadily developing a rift not only with the European Union, but NATO as well.
